My family is German and I will say, this was by far the best meal I had while vacationing. It reminds me of the fabulous meals I have when I go back to the motherland to visit. The jaeger schnitzel (fried pork smothered in sautéed mushrooms and gravy), spätzle (perfectly cooked, tender egg dumplings topped with the most savory gravy you will ever eat) red cabbage (sweeter than what I'm used to but a nice balance when eaten with the sour kraut) and sour kraut (cooked with crispy bacon) are to die for. My German grandfather was with us and raved about the meal after we left. The only thing that we did not care for was the music. We were so excited to hear the accordion mentioned in other reviews and we're disappointed -- the gentleman singing and playing the guitar was very talented but there's something wrong about listening to a slow rendition of "Margaritaville" while sitting in an authentic German restaurant surrounded by steins and other German decor. Jimmy Buffet and James Taylor overpowered the authentic feel. The food was phenomenal though.

Excellent German food. My husband is German, and we compared the food to what his mother would make. The Gasthaus Platte was wonderful and too much for one seating. Delicious sauerbraten. The bratwurst was terrific, served with sauerkraut and delicious mustard. I couldn't finish the knockwurst, so took it home. The red cabbage was just the right combination of sweet and sour. All the rest of the adults has Jaegerschnitzel and raved about the mushroom gravy. Middle grandson said the wiener schnitzel was as good as mine! We particularly enjoyed the accordion player. Would definitely revisit next time we are in Myrtle Beach.

Always looking for a good German restaurant when I travel and this one did not disappoint. The servers dress the part and they even had an accordion player. We were there around opening time and they already had a good crowd so that's always a good sign! They start you out with some soft rye bread and butter which was great with my ice cold German beer. I had the rouladin which came with 2 sides. I got the red cabbage of course and potatoes. And then I added a side of spatzle. All delish! The sauce was perfect and the red cabbage was not too sour! For dessert I tried the strudel and it was pretty good. The pastry was warm and flaky and the apples were sweet and tender! We'll definitely be back when we're at the beach!

This place has really great German food! Plus the prices are very reasonable. I loved the German decor, the place feels like you're stepping into another time in another country! And the wait staff is awesome! They even had a guy playing an accordion!

Amazing food great service we stop a few times every year we come down! I always get the all you can eat porkchops. Absolutely love em.

Service is great. Accordionist is 89 and was a hoot. He talked to us until the food came. Red cabbage was so freaking great. Spaetzle and potato pancakes and all you can eat pork chops! Mmmmmmm. Desserts were homemade and incredible. Great change of pace restaurant from all other MB dives. Go, eat and fall into a food coma.

I cannot express the authenticity of this restaurant, I can't. I have eaten here year after year while on vacation and am amazed at the consistency and outstanding taste of their food! I have lived in Germany for over five years (Army officer) and it feels that I am back in Deutchland when I walk in the door here. Beers, spot on, schnitzel, PERFECT, every side dish, seasoned just like across the pond! You must try this wonderful little piece of paradise tucked away here in Myrtle Beach!!! Wunderbar!!

I recently went here to have supper with a good friend. An accordion player serenades you while you eat. My friend knew the songs and although I didn't know the words, if I were to return, I would pick them up better. A stunning blonde waitress with a low cut Germanic costume took our orders. We both went for the sauerbraten, mashed potatoes smothered with gravy and red cabbage. The sauerbraten tasted authentic, with the right amount of seasonings and vinegar. It was tasty and not overpowering. The mashed potatoes were made right there and were mashed to a creamy consistency. The cabbage was a little bland, but the gravy made it tasty. We each had coffee and I took half my dinner home. The waitress asked if we wanted dessert and my friend said apple strudel. Hmm, well I was rather full and asked if I could take mine home, then she did the same. The prices are reasonable and we had a lovely time together. This is a restaurant that builds memories.

Friendly Staff & authentic German food! I posted pics. Hubby loves German Beer and was happy to have some off the tap that they import in.

Great food! The staff is very friendly. The portions are large and filling. The biggest problem is too many good things to choose from. They have a good selection of German beer, with 3-4 on tap. They also have a children's menu which features "typical" kid items for those of us with non-adventurous eating kids. It is a must stop while on vacation in MB. Family owned is better than cookie cutter chain any day.

Great atmosphere and service. The food was awesome and authentic. My family lived in Germany and this food definitely compares to our previous experience. Will return with friends and family.

Pleasantly surprised of how delicious the food was! Great ambience with an accordian player & great service! Had the Horst Gasthaus combo, Schwein Schnitzel and German chocolate cake... soooooo good, finished everything.

This was the second time we have eaten there and the food, service and entertainment were excellent. As we tend to say this is a keeper

last time there there were 3 families together that let their brats run roughshod all over the place....I asked them if they let the brats act like this at home to or just here and they acted aghast...then talked to the manager right in front of them and got a free beer and half off meal and the jerks got up and left while other patrons thanked me...food was pretty good

This is a typical Americanized version of a German guest house restaurant. Chalet interior, waitresses in costume, and a really really old guy playing the accordion The food was very good. The beer was good. Lots of the German restaurant favorites on the menu. Good wait staff. Food in a reasonable amount of time. Appropriate prices. A very tasty meal and a good experience. Maybe our best meal of the entire week.

My wife has wanted to stop here for past couple trips to NMB and we are happy we finally did. We have dined at a number of German restaurants and this is one of the best we have eaten at. Server was very nice and recommended items. We had potato pancakes and they were very close to what my grandmother used to make as was the sauerbraten. The knock wurst was also very good with nice texture and flavor. I loved the dumpling, it was very much like a matzo. We ordered a side of spaetzle, which tasted just like what we make at home. Desserts were all very good, especially the strudel. Atmosphere was fun and the accordion player was very personable, coming over to talk with us and told us he had been in our home city many times. I highly recommend Horst Gasthaus.

We stopped in with our 3 small kids and my parents for supper. We are familiar with German food and have high expectations so we were encouraged by all the positive reviews. We are so glad we tried! The food was amazing and very fairly priced. The live music (and super friendly diners) kept my kids occupied. And the service was fast and friendly! Loved the sweet tea! We will definitely be back on our next vacation.

Excellent German cuisine. Had the Horst platter. Great food and ALOT of it. Just ask for a to go box when you set down. Will definitely come back when in Myrtle Beach.

Feels like you are in Germany! I like their chicken breast with fries and red cabbage on the sides. Reasonable prices and lots f good ambience in the place accompanying a guy playing an accordion in front. The waitresses are dressed in a fashionable traditional German skirts. You must try this place. Be sure to come in time :)

Nice German ambience, complete with an accordion player to serenade you while you eat. Staff were friendly and attentive. Food was good, but not the best German meal I have had. Jaeger Schnitzel was tasty, but potatoes were somewhat bland and the green beans so-so. The spaetzel was also pretty good.

We went to this restaurant while in Myrtle Beach this week , my wife and daughter had some of the pork dishes which they said was very good and I had the sauerbraten which was good but the best and not the worst it came with red cabbage which was very acidic and the potatoe dumpling was gummy and the gravy was ok but not a fan of using cookies in a main course but this is common in some restaurants. The wait staff was great as the decor.

I love this place! Let me go ahead and get the negative out of the way. This place is old, and it shows. It probably hasn't see any major work in 30 years. The staff is misunderstood. They come off as dry and not very friendly until you've been there a couple of times and realize they are extremely nice people who just aren't overly talkative. The decor is cheesy, and the one man band is kind of sad...but somewhat entertaining. Though very old, this place is surprisingly clean. Having said all the above, don't be turned off by the old somewhat neglected appearance. This is not your typical boring chain establishment. It has character, and it actually pretty fun. The staff is not talkative, but very helpful and friendly. The food, in my opinion is fantastic. I only go about twice a year, but I've never been let down. In-fact this is where I choose to have my annual birthday meal. Nothing beats brats and Spaten followed by homemade black forest chocolate cake. My who family loves this place. It's just different. Sometimes "different" is worth it's own star in the rating. I'll be going again this year for my birthday.

Bad food, bad service and bad entertainment. Save your money! I ordered the cabbage roll special but was enforced 10 minutes later that they were out of it. I asked if I could just order a hot dog off the kids menu then because I am not a German food fan and she told me they would add $3 onto the price since I was over 12. I said that was fine because it seemed that I had no other choice. When my food arrived my hot dog was on a hamburger bun! I couldn't stop laughing. I was with a group of 8 and nobody was impressed. I will say that the Black Forest cake was good.

Kind of nostalgic since we came to this place on our first trip to the beach together... But I thought it was pretty yucky. The staff was nice though.

Awesome potato pancakes and Spaten beer! The all you can eat pork chops are unbelievable! Great tasting! Cucumber salad was tasty too! My parents said its the best potato pancake theyve had, and theyve been to Germany! Ask for Christel - she's the best! Expensive though when u add it up!

I hope it's temporary but something has changed recently in the kitchen and not exactly in a good way. It's not exactly "bad" but it's been heavily Americanized and toned down. This isn't nearly as authentic as it has been in the past.

This is probably the best German restaurant you can go to on the beach! Both of my parents have spent 10+ years collectively in Germany and I just got back from Berlin and we all had flashbacks when we heard the music, saw the outfits/decor, and tasted the food! The music changes night after night, but on our night the gentleman was open for requests, and he was more than happy to do the Chicken Dance when we asked for it! You can believe we were rocking out in that joint! Who doesn't love the chicken dance! Will be a definite go back when we return to Myrtle Beach for our next vacation!

Let's start out with the positives. Here's an actual restaurant in South Carolina pretending to be German. Good for them! And between 6 & 9 they have an accordion player playing a medly of old favorites. Downside? Unfortunately, the food is lousy, well, okay, average. The meals were generic in flavor and quality. The weiner schnitzel, while pounded thin, was still tough. It came with a choice of mashed potatoes or fries. What's up with that? No spaetzles? Well, the mashed potatoes were lumpy, proving at least that they were real. The red cabbage was tasteless. The pork chop was tough. From my dinner seat I saw 3 US (yes, US!) flags - 2 large and one small. Why? This is a German restaurant. Is this to make senior citizens & rednecks feel safe and secure in this "foreign" environment? The food here is 2 1/2 stars, but I'll give the place 3 for at least making the effort to have a different, non-chain, non-corporate restaurant in a tourist town in South Carolina.

Fantastic meal in a charming environment. Out waitress (Inge) was exceptionally nice and helpful. The sauerbraten reminded me of my grandmother's who came from Germany. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

If I were to guess, I'd say at least my 10th or 12th time here. Last year wasn't as good as years past, but this year no complaints. Horst greeted us, very friendly, and even jokes with him after dinner about some things. I had the all u can eat pork chops(ate 3 total). Well cooked. The German Potato salad was great. Everyone else on my party loved everything.

I am German and need to say that this was probably the worst experience I've made. The food was just terrible. I don't remember German food tasting that bad. Definitely do not recommend this place. No flavor and the meat just dry .....

My 2nd visit was last night, and I had Bavarian Goulash. It reminded me of stew beef, served with a light tomato sauce over noodles. It was good, and the meat was very tender. For my side, I got the red cabbage. My wife got the Chicken Schnitzel, and my daughter got the Chicken Breast Parmigiana. The parmigiana was the best, but all of the entrees were good. The fried potatoes were very good, and the green beans tasted homemade, but they lacked seasoning. We also ordered a potato dumpling, and no one liked it. It was very bland, with no taste. Service was excellent, and the accordion music was fun to listen to. Portions are big!

  • Jeramy P.

The menu looks good but the food could use a bit of work. I had the Wiener Schnitzel and it was really greasy and one side was cooked well done and the other side was barely browned. The green beans were canned and the gravy tasted like it was made from a powder. We used a restaurant.com coupon and the price was good but they automatically added 20% tip so keep that in mind while redeeming. Having lived in Germany I guess my expectations were a little too high.

Pretty good....reasonably authentic...and I find the folks to be exceedingly friendly and very efficient servers. I think this place is a good value...especially with coupons locally available..and often on restaurant.com Bummer that Teri S had an unfortunate experience...doesn't seem in character from my many experiences at Horst's. Accordion player is a real plus...makes it more fun !

  • Tom M.

Had a good dinner there last night. Wife had the goulash which was very tasty and rich. I had the stuffed pork chop. Wow! Lots of food. The cooked temperature could have been hotter but it was still very good as were the red cabbage and home fries. Oh yeah, did I mention the accordion player and the very cold draft beet?

This place has great German food! The portions were very generous. My wife couldn't even finish her meal. The atmosphere was very authentic. They have live music, which unfortunately wasn't going on at the time of our visit. The waitress was from Germany, which made for a more realistic feel. She was very nice.

  • Sumner B.

All 4 of us had excellent and larger quantities of food and loved the German accordion player. Servers very nice and patrons were enjoying the food and music throughout the restaurant. This is must visit if you like authentic German food.

Trust me on this one. Every time we come here we have a great time and a great meal. We always get the same waitress who has her own style we have learned to love. The jaeger schnitzel is always what I order and never disappoints. The sides are great the beer is GREAT. I can't wait until we come back next year. Must save room for apple strudel, best I have ever had.

  • Tim T.

Absolute great place! I took my wife and four kids (ages 21, 19, 16, 6) and we thoroughly enjoyed everything. I was a little disappointed that there was a problem which made draft beer unavailable that night, but a bottled Spaten Dunkel sufficed. We all loved our food. I travel to Germany frequently for business and found this place to be quite authentic. We also loved Peter's accordion playing and good conversation. If you need a break from steak and seafood, I highly recommend Horst Gasthaus. I can't guarantee you will like German food, but at least if you try it here, you will have tried authentic German food. I have eaten at better restaurants, but because this is about as good as any German food I've had in Germany, and because of the great service, 5 stars is in order.

    (5)
  • Art S.

German restaurant that serves good German draft beer and excellent sauerbraten. Mix that with an accordion player playing patriotic tunes and all you can eat pork chops. Try to find that anywhere but South Carolina. Good luck. Great food, great atmosphere, great service, great fun experiance.

We try to go here every time we're in Myrtle Beach. German comfort food with live entertainment. What's not to love? Favorite is the pork Jagerschnitzel with spatzle. Home fries and bratwurst is very yummy too.

They are technically challenged. Tried to redeem an electronic Restaurant , com coupon while there. They then called it in to find out it had already been redeemed an hour earlier ( restaurant.com is in the Central time zone! They refused to honor the certificate.

We were so eager to visit this restaurant, my husband was USAF stationed in Rhien Main AFB Frankfurt, Germany and always had such wonderful stories of the quaint restaurants. Finally planned our evening to visit Horst Gasthaus. We were seated at a 2 top, many tables empty around us, but with 2, 4 tops full beside us, the male host came to tell us that he would not have seated us if he knew we only wanted appetizer, he needed the table space for people ordering dinner. He said it would be alright tonight, but not again. We were in shock! Had ordered 2 appetizers and 2 beers. What the h#$%? Should have gotten up and left before our food arrived, but wanted to try the German food. What a waste of our time and unnecessarily embarrassed! I'm still in shock! Who does this? There were plenty of empty tables! Will never recommend this crazy Establishment!
